SCORING STAYS THE COURSE
After the completion of the 2009 competition season, the
scoring/judging experts of each of the 13 individual Varsity “Brands” gathered
to address concerns about consistency and reliability of competition scoring as
well as disparity in judging practices across the Brands. The solution
was the creation of the Varsity Standard of Scoring. A universal or standard score sheet that
would be used by all the Brands for judging allstar cheer competitions.
While no two Brands’ scoring were exactly the same, most of the Brands could be
characterized or separated into two groups. The majority had the same or
substantially similar scoring already in place while the remaining Brands had
more individualized systems that reflected that particular Brand’s style or
preferences. For the most part however, even these individualized systems
could be adapted or modified in the tabulation process to allow those Brands to
also use the same sheet and rubric.
As the project reached completion it became clear that the
ALL STAR CHALLENGE scoring system was neither substantially similar to any
other Brand nor could the Varsity Standard be easily modified or adapted to
enable us to continue the pursuit of our “mission” or execute our judging
philosophy. As you can see, our very essence is in our scoring and our
uniqueness.
The Varsity Standard of Scoring was developed by some of the most knowledgably and respected individuals in the allstar industry. ALL STAR CHALLENGE was very involved from beginning to end, even after determining that we would not be using the system. In the end, all of the components of the Varsity Standard are actually, in one way or another, a part or factor in the ALL STAR CHALLENGE system. Teams can still reap the benefits of the Varsity Standard and there is no need to change their routines. History shows that teams that are successful at ALL STAR CHALLENGE are successful most anywhere. There is no reason this should not continue.
